In 1940, a light cruiser design was commissioned. Its main purpose was to support destroyers in attack, reconnaissance, patrol, and raiding operations. To meet these aims, it was necessary to incorporate strong armor, advantageous positioning of all types of artillery, high speed, and high survivability. Two draft designs were presented—with six and nine 152 mm main guns. The resulting project was pursued but was never implemented due to the outbreak of World War II.
